Johnston made his English National Opera début in 1992 in David Freeman’s production of Monteverdi’s Orfeo. Over the last two decades he has performed with many leading companies both in the UK and abroad, most recent engagements including, at ENO, Montano in David Alden's new production of Otello, Giorgio Germont and Marquis d'Obigny in the revival of Konwitschny's La Traviata, Narumov in a new production of The Queen of Spades under the baton of Edward Gardner; Giorgio Germont in David McVicar’s La Traviata, and the covers of the title role in Sweeney Todd, and Basilio Il barbiere di Siviglia (Welsh National Opera); Scarpia Tosca (RTÉ Concert Orchestra/National Concert Hall, Dublin); Roderick/Sam in Hindemith’s The long Christmas dinner (Les Jardins Musicaux festival, Switzerland); and Benoît/Alcindoro La bohème (Iford Festival Opera).

Described as “immaculate” and the “Jewel in the crown” by The Times for his portrayal of Sir John Falstaff for Mid Wales Opera, Johnston’s previous role highlights include the title role in Rigoletto, Dr Kolenaty The Makropulos Case, Nikitich Boris Godunov, The Cardinal The Duchess of Malfi, Marquis d’Obigny La Traviata, 1st SS Officer The Passenger, The Guide Death in Venice, also covering Jago Otello, Tomsky Queen of Spades, Oedipus Thebans, Faninal Der Rosenkavalier, Scarpia Tosca, The Dutchman Der Fliegende Holländer, and Amonasro Aida (ENO); The Guide Death in Venice (La Scala, Milan; La Monnaie; De Nederlandse Opera; Concertgebouw, Amsterdam); The Traveller cover Death in Venice (Teatro Real, Madrid); Mr Gedge Albert Herring, Forester The Cunning Little Vixen, Garibaldo Rodelinda, Talbot Maria Stuarda, and Scarpia Tosca (English Touring Opera); Don Alfonso Così fan tutte, Eisenstein Die Fledermaus, Marco Gianni Schicchi, Il Pedone La Wally, and Michonnet Adriana Lecouvreur (Opera Holland Park); Rambaldo La Rondine (Iford Arts); and the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Michele Il Tabarro (Haddo House). Further afield Charles has performed the title role in Don Giovanni, Il Conte Almaviva Le nozze di Figaro, and Golaud Pelléas et Mélisande (l'Opéra de Chambre de Paris), Garibaldo Rodelinda (BAM, New York), and the title role in Verdi’s Macbeth (Singapore).

With an affinity for the works of British composers, Johnston has portrayed many of the leading baritone roles of Benjamin Britten including Balstrode and Ned Keene Peter Grimes, Demetrius and Theseus A Midsummer Night Dream, Mr Noye Noye’s Fludde, Ananias The Burning Fiery Furnace, and the Father The Prodigal Son. He created the role of the Father/Sir Lancelot in Lynne Plowman’s Gwyneth and the Green Night, a co-production between Music Theatre Wales and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, performed the role of the King in Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Eight songs for a mad King at the Electrostatic Festival, Choregos in Harrison Birtwistle’s Punch and Judy, and Smirnov in William Walton’s The Bear at Les Jardins Musicaux festival, Switzerland.

In the 2017/18 season he makes his Greek debut, and also returns to Welsh National Opera, and Lyric Opera Dublin.
